Shelly scarf on the internet.....row 1, 4 dc in 4th ch from hook, skip 4chs *shell (5dcs) in nex chain, skip 4 chs, repeat from * to last chain....3 dc in last chain, turn....the end and the beginning are not the same???? you start with chain 19.

Also row 2, chain 3, counts as dc...4 dcs in 1st dc. work shell in 3rd dc of each shell???? The shell would be right next to the 4dcs you just made??/ so sorry for the questions...but it seemed so easy. thanks

Kit,
Look at the picture of this scarf and it will help you understand what is going on in the stitch placement.

Thanks for the picture very much......on row 2, chain 3, counts as dc...4 dc in 1st dc, work shell in 3rd dc of each shell.......the work shell in 3rd dc....???? you are putting the 4 dcs in the 1st dc and work shell in 3rd would be right near it???? Hope I am explaining my question right.....thank you for your help.

Also on row 1 the part that threw me was I thought ends were always the same...

The picture shows >
ch 3 ( is counted as a dc ) and make 4 dc in the 1st dc of the 3 dc group > that makes for a 5 stitch shell >

then in the 2 shells following make 5 dc in the center dc of the shell,
the last group is the 3 dc,>
Turn , ch3 ( counts as a dc ) and continue the shells.

Your gonna say " Ahh now I get it "

Hi, yes, I finally go it while riding in the car for a visit....It is a very pretty scarf....my problem was that I always thought the two ends of rows had to be the same.....with this scarf one end is 3 dcs and one end is 5dcs....I thank you so much for your help.

Kit,
I am so Happy that when you could have some time to pay attention to the creation you want to make > that the pattern, Hook, Yarn and You got to understand each other.

And , this happens to me VERY often.
I can read over a pattern and work something that is to be IT,
but I end up saying > whaaaa >>?
Then I work it several times and get a "Light Bulb Moment" and say > ""I got it"" !

I have been Crocheting for 60 years,BUT (I don't do afghans).

So > Happy Scarf making and more .
