To get the most out of these boards, before posting a topic, we suggest:

Scrolling through past posts to see if your question has already been asked and answered. Postings are in chronological order of the date when the topic was first posted. You can also use the SEARCH function to look for past posts about your question.

If you don't see your question addressed, or if you have additional questions, post a New Topic rather than replying to an existing topic. This will increase the likelihood of getting responses to your specific question. Also, try to describe your specific question in the topic subject line rather than "New Knitter" or "Help."

The more information you can provide in your question, the better the responses.

We hope you enjoy the postings on this board and will come back to share your knowledge with others.

Yarn gauge

No, not knitting gauge. What I am talking about is a gizmo that you run the yarn in a skein through and it measures how much you have in yards. I have some older skeins that do not provide linear measurements, and am therefore not sure what I can make with them. And, becaue they're older, I can't buy more if I don't have enough. This is sort of an ocassional problem, not a major thing. I have tried undoing the whole skein and measuring it with a yardstick, but that leaves a whole bunch of loose yarn lying about and is probably not very accurate, as it gets a bit stretched that way and may appear to be more than it really is. I looked in a few catalogues, and found one of $65! Another catalogue had one for $49, and a sort of scale that purported to find the same information, in a more tedious fashion and selling for $23. Well, any of those prices seem a bit steep for a situation that doesn't come up all that often. I would welcome any information or ideas any of you may have. Thanks in advance.
