What to do when there is a space.

Hello to all.
I made a dishcloth.(Cheer!)
On the 2nd row it had a single crochet and then you made a chain (and skipped that stitch), and you repeated this across.
On the 3rd row it was double crochet all the way.
Now double crocheting into the single crochet stitch was easy, then I came to the chain stitch/ space. I tried to do it into the chain stitch and that was really hard. Because cotton yarn doesn't have any 'give' in it. Then I just did the double crochet into the chain space. That worked well and was super-easy!
So, was I supposed to do it that way?
Is this what the pattern writer meant for me to do? If so, why didn't it say to do it in the chain1 space?
Is this common? Next time I have a pattern - should I always just do it in the space?

Thanks in advance.
