Confusing Directions-tr in lower stitch, etc.-2 questions

I am a first time crocheter (I hope I spelled that right) and am trying to learn how to crochet from a book, (Crocheting for Dummies). I am doing a pattern found on the back of the yarn label for a blanket for my unborn son. I have reached a point where I have not figured out a certain piece of instructions. The instructions are as follows:

5th Row: With MC, 1 sc in each of first 4 sc. *1 tr in missed sc 4 rows below. Miss next sc behind tr. 1 sc in each of next 9 sc. Rep from* to last 5 sc. 1 tr in missed sc 4 rows below. Miss next sc behind tr. 1 sc in each of last 4 sc. Ch 3. Turn.

Okay, I understand and did the first line of instructions. I tried doing '1 tr in missed sc 4 rows below', but it is not coming out right. What I have been doing is following the instructions in the book I have on how to do a tr, but the only difference is I am inserting the hook in the stitch 4 rows below. More specifically, what I have been doing is:
I have a loop on my hook already. I yarn-over twice, insert my hook through the missed sc 4 rows below (through the front of my project to the back). I yarn-over again in the back of the project and pull it through the stitch to the front (so there are 4 loops on the hook now). I yarn-over once more and pull it through the first 2 loops. Yarn-over again, pull it through the next 2 loops. And then yarn-over a last time and pull it through the last 2 loops.
What it looks like after I'm done is not right. Instead of the tr running down the blanket to the missed sc, it is up top at current level and in a bunch (I hope that makes sense). Please help!! I don't understand how to make this stitch in 4 rows below (at least how to make it look like it should).

My second question is about the next line of directions for this row. What does 'Miss next sc behind tr' mean?
