I don't think I can do this

OK, took up crochetting about 3 weeks ago and I'm just picking up anything past a sc, and I'm not any good at it, frustrating as heck.
Some friends on a parenting site I go to(and I love all these women, they rock) said that knitting was easier. I got knitting needles and a couple books on it today and I can't even cast on. I think I should have reminded them that I have carpal tunnel in both wrists. I'm a computer geek by trade, I'm mourning my dead laptop and getting mad at having to use my boyfriend's desktop, which means I can't sit on the couch and do stuff on the computer. If the credit card company doesn't get the paperwork to my parents(the laptop was a birthday present, I'm an adult, and the darn thing is out of warranty for HP but the cc doubled the warranty so they are dealing with it. I know whats wrong and it's something I can't fix as my Windows loader exe is corrupted and the recovery CD ain't fixing it) I'm going to scream, I want to throw my laptop and my hooks and needles across the room. Figures, my ex takes my kid(he's 5 1/2) for 2 weeks and my laptop dies. Like I said I'm a computer geek, I like my computer more than most people, it doesn't yell or make fun of me, and it never gets mad and refuses to talk to me. Anyways, I should be able to cast on and do so well. Looked on the internet, found several videos none of which helped, except one. Problem is holding the yarn, I don't hold my yarn when crocheting, it feels unnatural and makes it impossible to actually crochet. I guess knitting is only easier once you learn how to cast on and actually knit, my left wrist is just so happens to be acting up right now and I can't cast on to save my freaking life.
By the way I'm a perfectionist so I think I should be able to crochet by now and I KNOW I should be able to cast on.
I'm just frustrated.
Any help would be so welcome.
