How to check gauge when substituting to a finer yarn?

Hello,

I want to work on this pattern that is using a medium yarn but I would like to use a finer yarn (#2). My gauge is coming out to half of what the pattern states...is it possible to use this finer yarn, if so how do I accomodate for the difference?
