Where Are Warm Up America! Afghans Being Sent?

Volunteers complete and distribute thousands of afghans locally, and you'll read many of their stories in this newsletter. At the same time, the Craft Yarn Council continues to receive hundreds of thousands of individual sections, which we assemble and distribute.

Accompanying each box of Warm Up America! afghans is a letter from program coordinator Pat Martin expressing the following sentiments: “We consider it a privilege to be able to provide these afghans...it is made possible only by the generous efforts of thousands of volunteers who faithfully send in the sections and completed afghans for donation.”

Following are a few of the wonderful letters of thanks that have been sent to our offices.

The afghans arrived and have already been distributed to those in need from Bamberg County, SC....It is very, very unusual to receive phone calls or thanks for the things we do (and they are not expected) but there have been several handwritten notes expressing appreciation of the afghans and the warmth they have provided. One lady called and was so excited to have one for her new baby--the first! I might mention we use these afghans for “burnouts” and we have had quite a few this year with abnormally cold weather. When the family loses their home or apartment and must move in with a friend or relative, bed clothing is usually a problem. We have but one left here in the office where we process the burnout victims, so if you have five or six available they would be appreciated. In addition to our Chapter, there are many folks in Bamberg County, that have your kindness in their prayers.

--Harvey Kling, Executive Director, Bamberg County Chapter, American Red Cross.

We received your wonderful contribution of 80 afghans. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to your organization. As you are aware, we endeavor to provide the necessities of life to more than 500 children and their families in Horry County, SC. You have made this winter warmer and more comfortable for many of them.

There are so many stories to share: One is of the 80-year-old gentleman suffering from the effects of a stroke. He is bedridden, living in a dilapidated house, with the only heat source being an old stove. His wife cares for him and tries to keep him warm, wrapping him in a sheet and coats. Not much cover for these cold winter nights. We were so happy to be able to give him two of your afghans--one for his shoulders and a large warm one for the bed. When we left, he was sitting up, smiling and warm. Thanks to you!

Another of our families was burned out of their very modest home. We were able to relocate them, but they had nothing left. We were able to help them with some of the necessities. Thanks to you, they have afghans for each of the family.

Your offer of additional afghans is so much appreciated. We can use as many as you feel you are able to supply. We have so many working poor in this area. Folks who are trying, but are just not able to provide for themselves due to low wages, no benefits and high rents. It is only through the generosity of groups such as yours that we are able to fulfill our goal of helping these wonderful, proud, hard-working people. Thank you and God bless.

--Bette A. Kurtz, SOS/Caring 4 Kids Garden City, SC.

“I am so grateful to you folks for your great help...Today a lady 95 years old was given an afghan for her birthday. She sends love to each one of you. Her joy was great!...”

--Evelyn Seals, director of Seals Blessing House, Middlesboro, KY
