Your yarn stays in the front because you are purling these stitches together. What I do is taking my working needle so that it is more aligned with the holding needle -- that is, I have the tip that I will be inserting into the stitches facing close to the same direction of the tip of the holding needle -- then insert the needle tip into the back part of the loop of the two stitches starting with the second to the front stitch, wrap my yarn to purl and complete the purl stitch. If I am feeling anal about the twist of my loops I may change the stitch mount of these two stitches first before doing the p2totbl.
