what kind of project are you trying to make, and if you want to make a basic scarf
chain semi loosely 26 chains
if you want to make a double crochet scarf, yarn over into the fourth chain that make a double crochet in each chain stitch.. in row two make a double crochet in each chain.. and continue
thats unless you have a pattern then.. try to follow that..
