ch 2# what the # sign mean

Hi... I haven't seen the # sign used in a pattern and haven't been able to find it on any abbreviations or symbols lists. It could possibly mean chain 2 stitches... but i am only guessing. It this a pattern written in US English terms or from overseas?:)
