I am VERY new, and tried to teach myself...I really need help with basic patterns.
This is for a hat bonnet
Round 1. Ch 1, 5 sc in same sp as joining: corner made* + sc in each st across motif to last st before joining; hdc in next st, dc in joining, hdc in next st on next motif +; rep + to + across last motif; sc in each st across last motif to corner ch-2-sp: corner made; rep from * 3 times more, ending last rep without working last corner; join in first sc (the + is the dagger thing)
Ok, right off I get the chain 1 and the 5 single crochet in same space as joining that makes the corner...from there though I get lost any help would be awesome.
Thanks,
Lost

You have a repeat section within a repeat section, which can be confusing. Let me try to decode this, putting each step on a separate line. (I assume you know what sc, hdc and dc mean.)
ROUND 1:
chain 1
5 sc in same space as the joining (this makes a corner)
[BEGIN Section A]
... [BEGIN Section B]
...... sc in each stitch across the motif to the last stitch before the joining
...... hdc in next stitch
...... dc in the joining
...... hdc in next stitch [which is] on next motif
... [END Section B]
... Repeat the instructions in Section B across [until you get to the] last motif
... sc in each stitch across the last motif until you get to the space made by the chain-2 in the corner
... corner made - ? [I think a step is missing here: probably 5 sc in the space made by the chain-2, just like you did at the beginning of the round. Try it and see if it makes sense.]
[END Section A]
Repeat Section A from BEGIN to END another 3 times [I assume you are working a total of 4 edges], without working the corner stitches at the end. [You already made a corner when you first started the round.]
Join to the first sc.
