You're probably unaware that most of us will not look beyond the second or third page (some have said that they will not look in the archives at all when they see a "new post" that is not on the first page) to track down archival additions.

You did the right thing by posting your original query as a new topic.

If you want to tie into an old topic you can simply reference it in the "new topic" message. Give the subject and author and then it's easy to find.

If there were a quick link to new posts in old messages the problem would be eliminated, but so far this problem has not been addressed.
