I am the happy recipient of sock yarn for Christmas. Who would like to recommend a book or other pattern source for a first-time sockster? I am an experienced knitter, with sweaters, hats, mittens, etc. to my credit, and have worked in the round before, but I have no clue how to choose a pattern for socks. I have heard that toes up is easier to fit, but that's only one of my questions. The yarn is a self-striping wool blend from Joann's called "Soles and More."
Anything I can learn from you veterans will make my choices easier.
Thank you and Happy New Year.

I've looked over Wendy Johnson's Socks From the Toe Up and it's very good. It covers a lot of technique as well as providing many lovely stitch patterns (many lace). Also check out the Yahoo Sockknitter's group.

Wendy Johnson is good and many other new sock knitters recommend Silver's class http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/
