Hats Off to '99--Knit & Braided Hat & Scarf

Ribs and braids decorate this attractive knitted hat and scarf set that's guaranteed to keep you warm this winter.

Scarf
Finished measurement: 11" by 72"
  1. Hold 2 strands of yarn (each from a different skein) together to form a double strand that will be used as a single strand.

    step 1

  2. Using double strand, cast on 23 stitches.

  3. Purl (p) 1 row.

  4. this row is the right side of the work. Knit (k) the first 4 stitches, then p 2 stitches and k 2 stitches. Continue to p 2 stitches and k 2 stitches until there are 4 stitches left on the other needle. K these 4 stitches.

  5. K the first 2 stitches, then p 2 stitches and k stitches. Continue to p 2 stitches and k 2 stitches across row.

  6. Repeat Step 4.

  7. Repeat Step 5.

  8. Continue to repeat Steps 4 & 5 until the scarf measures 72" from the beginning. The last row should be Step 5.

  9. K 1 row.

  10. Bind off loosely.
Braids: Make 6 the same
  1. For each braid, cut nine strands of yarn each 26" long. Tie them together 1" from one end.

  2. Divide the strands into 3 groups of 3 strands each.

  3. Bring the strand on the right-hand side over the strand in the center.

  4. Bring the strand on the left-hand side over the strand that is now in the center. 5) Repeat Step 3.

  5. Repeat Step 4.

  6. Continue to repeat Steps 3 & 4 until you reach the end of the strand.

  7. Tie a separate strand of yarn around the end of the braid to keep it from unravelling.

Sewing on braids:
  1. Pin a braid across one end of the scarf on the right side. Turn the ends of the braid to the wrong side of the scarf.

  2. Thread a tapestry needle with yarn and sew the braid to the scarf, sewing through the center of the braid.

  3. Sew 2 more braids across the same end of the scarf, having 3" between the braids.

  4. Sew remaining 3 braids in the same way, 3" apart to the other end of the scarf.


Hat
Gauge: Measuring across, top to bottom,
  1. Cast on 54 stitches.
  2. Knit (k) 2 stitches, then purl (p) 2 stitches across the row.

  3. P 2 stitches, then k 2 stitches across the row.

  4. Repeat Steps 1 & 2 until piece measures 9" from beginning. Last row should be Step 3.

  5. Next row: k 2 together. Then p 2 together and k 2 together across the row. You will now have 27 stitches.

  6. K 1 stitch and p1 stitch across row.

  7. Repeat Step 6 twice more.

  8. P 2 together across row until you have 1 stitch left on needle. Purl lst stitch. You will now have 14 stitches.

  9. Cut yarn leaving long end.

  10. Pull end through stitches on needle. Draw together tightly and secure end.

  11. Sew back seam.
Braid and Tassel:
  1. Make 1 braid as for scarf.

  2. Make 1 tassel around a 7" cardboard. Place short strand of yarn across top of cardboard cut to length of tassel desired. Wind yarn several times around cardboard. Tie strands tightly together around top as shown, leaving at least 3" ends on ties; clip other end of strands. Wrap piece of yarn tightly around strands a few times about 1" below tie and knot strand. Trim ends.

  3. Sew tassel to 1 end of braid. Sew other end of braid to center top of hat. Wrap strand of yarn 8 times around the top of braid and secure end.
