Knitted Pullover

Check it out! Have fun alternating blocks of color to create this classic knitted pullover.
Size: Directions are given for size small. Changes for medium and large sizes are in parentheses.
Materials:
4-ply worsted weight yarnKnitting needles size 7 and 9 (or size to obtain gauge) Stitch holders Yarn needle for finishing
- 12 (15, 18) ozs. blue (or the color of your choice)
- 3 (6, 6) ozs. white (or the color of your choice)

Finished measurements:
- 4 stitches = 1"
- 11 rows = 2" (in stockinette stitch)
NOTE: When changing colors, pick up new color from under dropped color to twist yarns and prevent holes. Carry color not in use loosely along wrong side of work.
- Bust -- 39 (43, 47)"
- Width of front or back at underarms -- 19 1/2 (21 1/2, 23 1/2)"
- Width of sleeve at upper arm -- 18 (19, 20)"
BACK: With smaller needles and Blue, cast on 78 (86, 94) stitches (sts).
Ribbing - Row 1: {Knit (k) 1, Purl (p) 1} repeat directions in brackets across. Repeat Row 1 until 2 1/2" from beginning, end with wrong side row. Change to larger needles. Work even in stockinette stitch (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 13 (13 1/2, 14)" from beginning, end with wrong side row.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 4 (4, 5) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, 2 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then decrease 1 st each end every other row 2 (3, 3) times -- 62 (68, 74) sts. Work even until armholes measure 9 (9 1/2, 10)" from beginning, end with wrong side row.
Shape Shoulders: Bind off 16 (18, 20) sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 30 (32, 34) sts for neck.
FRONT: With smaller needles and Blue, cast on 78 (86, 94) sts.
Ribbing: Work as for back. change to larger needles.
Begin Pattern -- Row 1 (right side): Join white and k 5; * with Blue, k 4, with White, k 4, * repeat between * * 7 (8, 9) times more = 8 (9, 10) times in all, with blue, k 4, with White, k 5.
Row 2: With White, p 5, with Blue, p 4, with White, p 4, * repeat between * * 7 (8, 9) times more = 8 (9, 10) times in all, with blue, p 4, with White, p 5.
Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 2.
Row 5: With Blue, knit 5 *with White, knit 4, with Blue, knit 4 * repeat between * * 7 (8, 9) times more = 8 (9, 10) times in all, with White, k 4, with Blue, knit 5.
Row 6: With Blue, purl 5, * with White, p 4, with Blue, p 4 ,* repeat between * * 7 (8, 9) times in all, with White, p 4, with Blue, p 5.
Rows 7 and 8: Repeat Rows 5 and 6. Repeat Rows 1-8 for check pattern until piece measures 13 ( 13 1/2, 14)" from beginning, end with wrong side row.
Shape Armholes: Keeping a pattern, work as for back -- 62 (68, 74) sts. Work even in pattern until armholes measures 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2)" from beginning, end with wrong side row.
SHAPE NECK -- Left Side, Next Row: Work in pattern on 26 (28, 30) sts, place remaining sts on holder. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next row (neck), then at same edge bind off 2 sts twice and decrease 1 st every other row 3 times -- 16 (18, 20) sts. Work even in pattern until same length as back to shoulders. Bind off.
Right Side: Leave center 10 (12, 14) sts on holder for neck, then from right side place remaining sts on larger needle, join color in progress, complete row in pattern. Work 1 row even. Keeping in pattern, at neck edge bind of 3 sts once, 2 sts twice, and decrease 1 st every other row 3 times -- 16 (18, 20) sts. complete as for left side.
SLEEVES -- Ribbing: With smaller needles and Blue, cast on 32 (34, 36) sts. Work as for back until 2 1/2" from beginning, end with wrong side row. Change to larger needles. Work in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 st each end every 4th row 20 (21, 22) times -- 72 (76, 80) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 18 1/2 (19, 19 1/2)" or length desired, end with wrong side row.
Shape Cap: Bind off 4 sts at beginning of next 2 rows, and 2 sts at beginning of next 4 rows, then decrease 1 st each end every other row 2 (3, 4) times -- 52 (54, 56) sts. Bind off.
FINISHING -- Sew left shoulder. Neckband: From right side with smaller needles and Blue, pick up and k 26 (28, 30) sts across back neck and 36 (38, 40) STS ACROSS FRONT NECK, INCLUDING THE STS ON HOLDER -- 62 (66, 70) sts. Work in ribbing as for back for 1 1/2". Bind off. Sew right shoulder and neckband. Sew side and sleeve seam. Sew in sleeves.
