Re: ShrugPosted by Alison Boucher on July 13, 1999 at 12:54:40: In Reply to: Shrug posted by Marge on July 03, 1999 at 16:15:02: Marge, You can substitute one yarn for another, provided they knit to the same guage (ex-worsted weight yarns knit to about 19 to 20 stitches over a 4 inch swatch). If you can find an angora yarn with the same guage as the suggested yarn, go ahead and try substituting it. Be sure to get the correct yardage amount of yarn or you may run out. By this I mean that, let's say the pattern calls for 5-3 ounce balls of yarn with a yardage of 150 yards each. That would mean that you would need 5 x 150 yards, or 750 yards, and would have to buy enough of the yarn you wanted to substitute to meet this yardage. You may want to buy a bit extra, as some yarns knit to the same gauge, but your length may vary a bit. To account for this, I would suggest that when making the shrug, go by the suggested measurements of length and width, rather than number of completed rows so that your garmet comes out to the size you want. Hope you don't find this too confusing! If so, please email me or post your questions for clarification. If the angora yarn does not have the same guage as the shrug pattern from this site, you could try this pattern too. http://www.woolworks.org/patterns/shrug.txt Good luck!
