yarn for rugs

I know that this site is primarily for knitting and
crocheting, and have used it often. But, I am thinking
of hooking a rug using wool yarns which seems to be the more modern method.(As opposed to cutting the strips from wool materials). But, I am finding this type of yarn very hard to locate. Paternayan makes some but is very expensive. Has anyone heard of using any of the 3 or 4 ply knitting yarns for this purpose?
