A. The Standard Yarn Weight System should not be used as an interchangeability chart. While it is a possible that two different yarns in one weight category can be interchanged, you must knit or crochet a gauge swatch to be sure. Even if the gauges of the two yarns are the same and match the pattern, there are other factors to consider, such as the “hand” or softness and drapability of the yarn.
A. In working with manufacturers to develop these Standards & Guidelines, we realized there were differences in how various companies numbered their hook sizes. That was the main reason we adopted the metric sizing, which is the actual measurement (circumference) of the hook.
A. From the beginning of this project, CYCA agreed that the Standards & Guidelines must be organic, i.e., growing and changing as the marketplace changes.
A. If you have a suggestion, please e-mail CYCA with your idea, along with the reasons why you feel this addition/change is important. The Standards & Guidelines committee meets periodically and will review these suggestions.
