Linda , here is what I found >>>
In row 1 it does read funny , But check row 2 and follow the way it reads BUT make the st into a ch > for Row 1 .

( skip 1 ch, sc in next ch, skip 1, ch 3 dc in next ch ) I think the ( , ) is in the wrong place !

( skip 1 st, sc in next st, skip 1 st, 3 dc in next st )
