Finished vest didn't hold it's shape

I am new to knitting and have finished a vest using silk/bamboo thread; however, after hand washing and drying flat as the directions indicated, the sweater is stretched out and droopy. It is currently unwearable. Did I do something wrong? Did I knit too loosely? The pattern is called "Lacy Top" by Patons. I'm very frustrated. Thanks. Jane

Vest has no body

Very common with this yarn fiber silk and bamboo have NO memory so produce very drapey fabrics which means that for vests and sweaters this is not the best fiber for the job. Trying the wash and dry and if that doesn't work then as has already been suggested rip it out and use the yarn for a shawl or scarf or anything else that won't need body.

Silk is a fiber that has a tendency to stretch out and it doesn't have bounce-back memory like wool.

You could try soaking it again, spinning out as much water as possible and tossing it into the dryer to see if it will shrink back a bit like cotton would. I've done this to a silk sweater that stretched out one me after a washing. It had washed up fine several times before and then it stretched out. It shrank back a bit so I am able to wear it although the fit is not as good as I would like.

You could also unravel it and use the yarn for something else.

I'm sorry to hear that all your work went wonky after a wash.
