Garter stitch/Stockinette stitch

What is the difference between a garter stitch and a stockinette stitch? I know they look different but how in the heck do you knit them? Also, I have a pattern that calls for "5 garter st ridges incl cast on row" and I don't have a clue what they mean! Can someone please help or would it be better to go to a knitting class? Thanks for any help!

Your pattern isn't written in established "knitspeak."

As JJK points out, the knitting community understands that 2 garter rows make a ridge, but that isn't the way patterns are commonly written. Also, the line about including the cast-on row is not standard. A good editor would translate that to "Cast on (so many) stitches. Work 9 rows garter stitch." or "Rows 1-9: Knit across" or something along those lines.

Anyway, why not check out one of the many tutorials that you can find with a quick web search? There are also dozens of good books. I usually recommend the Leisure Arts beginner books in the "10-20-30 Minutes to Learn to..." series or "I Can't Believe I'm..." series. They are beautifully and very clearly illustrated and they cover all of the basics and the things you need to know to make a polished garment.

Garter Stitch - knit every stitch on every row.
2 rows of garter = 1 ridge
Stockinette Stitch - knit 1 row then purl next row.
5 Garter Stitch ridges = 10 rows
Hope this helps and good luck.
