Hello everyone:
HELP!!

I am knitting BERNAT SOFTEE BABY HOODED BABY JACKET. Most of the instructions I understand with the exception of this one phrase that is making me even crazier than I already am.

What is the meaning of: "moss st pat"?

I have searched the Q&A with no luck.

Please help a newbie.

I found that pattern online at the Bernat site. It includes this section:

BACK
With MC cast on 53 (61-67) sts.
1st row: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
3rd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
4th row: K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
These 4 rows form moss st pat.

(Note this is over an ODD number of stitches.)

Craftsman -- that's the stitch pattern I call Moss Stitch. That wasn't very nice of Bernat hiding the stitch pattern instructions in the garment directions.

Moss stitch is used to describe many different stitch patterns. Marian has given you one -- an alternative name to seed stitch. It is also used to describe a stitch pattern where one works the alternating k1,p1 on row one. Row 2 is working the stitches as presented, Row 3 is knitting the purls and purling the knits and Row 4 is again knitting the stitches as presented -- knitting the knits and purling the purls.

I have a book that gives Moss stitch as k1, p1 on row 1, then I believe Row 2 was k, then Row 3 was p1, k1 and row 4 was knit.

Your instructions should give you directions for doing this stitch pattern. For commercial patterns, such as published by Bernat, I have usually found the instructions for specific stitch patterns towards the beginning before the actual directions for the item begins. If this was from a book or pamphlet, you should check the rest of the publication to see if Moss Stitch is explained.

Thank you for your help. I did not see any explanation for this particular stitch. I usually can find the meaning/instructions for the various stitches, but not this time.

I really appreciate your help.

Moss stitch is another name for seed stitch. It is done by knitting one st, purling the next, across the row. The next row is knit over the purl st and purl over the knit st, again across the row. You will find both terms listed in patterns, defined by the locale in which the author was raised. It looks somewhat like this:

*-*-*- for the first row
-*-*-* for the next row

You would continue in this manner for the number or rows/inches indicated.
