Herringbone Stitch

Hello,
I am working a pattern that appears to have a Herringbone stitch. I am not sure how to proceed. Here are the instructions:
ch 3 (counts as dc). *Miss next 3 hdc, 1 dtr in next hdc. Working in front of last dtr, 1 dc in each of 3 missed hdc

I am not sure if I start at the first skipped hdc or the 3rd skipped hdc.
Also, what does it mean working in front?

The next row is similar as above but it says to work in back. Can anyone decipher?

This is rather funny. Because I'm a leftie as well, I was very careful not to give a directional answer to your question, using general terms such as "beginning" and "last" instead of "left" and "right" or vice/versa even though I was thinking in my own directional terms.

Do the instructions for this Afghan row slowly >
You should be having CROSSED-over stitches > ( In Front )

Look with a magnifying glass at this small picture of the Afghan and you will see that the stitches make a cross-over.

Do as Alex said and then you will see the >Herringbone Stitch<

8th row: With A, ch 3 (counts as dc). *Miss next 3 hdc. 1 dtr in next hdc.
Working in front of last dtr, 1 dc in each of 3 missed hdc.
Rep from * to last hdc. 1 dc in last hdc. Turn.

You have a nice textured pattern there.

Do not count the stitch from which your current stitch is originating as a stitch to skip. Actually skip three whole hdcs. Into the next one work a dtr. Now go back to the first skipped hdc and insert your hook from the front of your work and work a dc into the top of it. Work the next two dcs in the next two hdcs and continue with directions.

There is the option when you skip to take your hook to the back of the work and work behind the next stitch that you made (in this case the dtr) or to bring the hook to the front. Try it and you'll see the difference.

And I think your first question was getting at whether or not you were to work from the beginning of the group of skipped stitches or backward from the last stitch. Unless you are directed (or unless the directions are poorly written), it's usually assumed that you work from the beginning.

If it looks peculiar or not like the illustration, work a couple more rows and see if it falls into place, if not, get back to us.

I should have mentioned that i was a lefty :-) . Thanks for the tips; after reading both tips, I was able to get back on track!!!
