Pattern Help Please! I am so confused...

Hi all, I'm trying to make a wrap from redheart and I got everything down, except for this part.
The wrap is made in "sections" for slits and the direction says, "with right side facing and previous section in front of work, join yarn in 25th st on row 21..."

I get the joining part but what does it mean to hold previous section in front of work? I know the stitch overlaps the previous section by two so does that mean I work the stiches "behind" the previous section? How would I that?

Here is the pattern in case I am confusing you guys:

Forums:

The shawl has a plain section, a center section that has fancy stitches, and another plain section. You work all three sections at the same time for 20 rows, then work the sections separately so the separate edges will form the slits. (When wearing, you pull one end of the shawl through the slits, so the shawl stays wrapped around you. Some scarf patterns have a similar feature.)

Here's what the pattern says, with my explanatory notes:

SPLIT FOR SECTIONS
First Side Section
Row 21: Ch 1, keeping in pattern as established, work 18 sts, turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.
Row 22: Ch 1, hdc in all sts across – 18 sts.
Rows 23-35: Work in pattern as established on 18 sts. Fasten off.

Center Section
Row 21: With right side facing and holding previous section behind work, join yarn in 17th st on Row 21 of Wrap for Center Section of Split, hdc in next 2 sts, work in pattern as established for 8 more sts – 10 sts.
Rows 22-35: Work as established on 10 sts. Fasten off.

NOTE: Here, "previous section" refers to the PLAIN section. The CENTER section will be IN FRONT OF the PLAIN section.

Third Side Section
Row 21: With right side facing and holding previous section in front of work, join yarn in 25th st on Row 21 of Wrap for Third Section of split, hdc in next 2 sts, work in pattern as established to end to row – 18 sts.
Rows 22-35: Work as established on 18 sts. Do not fasten off, turn.

NOTE: Here, "previous section" refers to the CENTER section. The CENTER section will be IN FRONT OF the PLAIN section, overlapping 2 sts.

So even if you can't visualize it ahead of time, trust the pattern and do exactly what it says. It should work OK.

For the overlaps, hold one section in front of the other (as indicated), then work through BOTH layers at once to join them.

I am also having problems with this as well. I tried some of the suggestions but i am still not comprehending it. I tried to find visuals but I cannot find any. Can someone help me please.

Oh boy,I am so glad I am not the only one that loves this wrap, but having a problem understanding the instructions. Can someone please post a diagram of how which end is suppose to be in the back and where do start the count to get to the 17th st on row 21. I'm just confused, but I don't want this to beat me.......HELP!!!!!!!!!

Thanks,
Freda

Hi Everyone, I love this wrap, but am wondering if anyone has any ideas how I can go about making the length longer on the wrap with slits. For us not so thin ladies,it needs to hang longer.I tried adding on at the end of pattern, but that just makes 1 side longer than the other.I would appreciate any help and/or, ideas given.

Thanks,
Freda

You will need to calculate how much longer you want your wrap to be on both ends. When you begin the wrap, just work that extra amount in the length before you work the directions for the slit. After you finish working the slit, make the rest of the wrap the additional length longer you want.

For example, suppose you want the wrap to be 3 inches on both ends. So follow the pattern directions but work the pattern for 3 more inches before you begin the slit. After you complete the slit portion, if the directions tell you to work 40 inches, work 43 inches. If the directions tell you to work 36 inches, work 39 inches.
