I am learing how to follow a pattern from a book. It calls for a multiple of 14 sts +1. So does this mean 14+ 1 just once or multiple times?

It means that if you want to do 3 repeats of the pattern you would calculate 3 x 14 and then add 1. If you want to do 5 repeats you would calculate 5 x 14 and then add 1. The "plus y" is always added after you multiply the first number times the number of repeats you want to do.
