Topic “Tips and Sharing: New Crocheters & Knitters”

Choosing patterns and yarn

My skill level is beyond beginner and I would like to move into more advanced projects (both knitting and crochet). When I am shopping around and see yarns I like, I don't seem to be able to match them to patterns that I want to do. The patterns I find call for very specific yarns and brands and these aren't the ones on sale at knit picks or at the store. I am accumulating yarn and getting tired of just making hats and scarves! Am I looking in the wrong places? Is there a way to match up the yarns I have with compatible patterns without being limited to the yarn manufacturer's patterns?

virus warning: charity site

I'm posting this on all three boards.

At another site I read that a couple of people infected their computers with multiple viruses when they opened the patterns page at www.chemocaps.com. I know that a number of people who frequent this site do charity work, particularly chemo caps, so I thought you ought to be warned.

curving

my curving was because the foundation chain was too tight, so i loosened it considerably on my next project, and now its startng to curve again! i dont know what to do.

stitches curving in ?

i am a beginner and i started an afghan but on the second row after chaining, the whole length of the beginning pattern is curved inward. how do i keep my rows straight?

Estimating yardage of a ball of yarn by weight

I was gifted a ball of yarn, but don't know the yardage. Is there a formula to calculate the yardage based on weight of ball and type (light worsted to worsted) of yarn?

New Forum

Why is there a new forum....I thought the old one was great...Always looked forward to reading so many questions answered...Now ,unless I'm not doing it correctly, it doesn't seem like there are many returns on subjects...I miss the old one...Lot of smart and lovely ladies out there willing to help...I've been gone for a few years due to mother's health and now look forward to reconnecting...Any clues?

showl - ssk abbreviations

Hi..
I'm knitting a showl and the instructions call for ssk for the corner decrease...However, the abbreviation chart says to slip, slip as to purl...then you knit the two ....I thought it was slip, slip as to knit and then knit the two together...Can't find anything where ssk is mentioned with both as to purl ...
KT did answer in the knit forum and I'm so grateful...

However, I wrote to the lady that did the Showl Pattern and her response was:

short row heels on toe up socks

I make socks, toe up, circular needles, both socks at once. I use the short row heel and like this method. However, after awhile, the heels begin to get thin and show wear. Does anybody have an answer as to how I can either repair these ( without them looking repaired) or reinforce while using this method. Years ago I used to knit socks from the top down and had a slip stitch type of heel but I don't know exactly how this would work on these socks, and am not sure exactly how I did them.

Confusion with yarn weight and requested gauge for scarf pattern

Hey all,
I'm very new to knitting, and I'm making a scarf from a pattern that can be found here:
http://www.freevintageknitting.com/scarf-pattern/botany2/scarf

I appologize if this is just a dumb mistake, but the specific part that confuses me is:
"MATERIALS: BOTANY CLASSIC SPORT, 1 oz. skeins,
Color A-5 skeins Color B-5 skeins
KNITTING NEEDLES: 1 pair "Boye" Non-Inflammable Needles, Size 6 -OR SIZE YOU REQUIRE TO KNIT TO GAUGE GIVEN BELOW.

GAUGE: 10 sts = 1 inch 29 rows = 4 inches"

Granny square too 'square'

I used to crochet a lot as a child (although I never did finish my 'snail' blanket, as I called it). I have recently started crocheting again so I can make a baby blanket out of granny squares for by best friend's first baby.
I have been making a couple of trial squares to get back into practice and it seems a little 'square'.
