purl stitck

Hi. I'm a new knitter and am making a scarf in stockinette stitch. Should I make the purl stitches tighter? When I was practicing, I noticed some small spaces or holes in my practice piece where I had purled. I read somewhere where they should be made a little tighter than knit stitches, but I wanted to confirm here. Thank you!

lost in instructions

pattern says:
*K1. yfwd. K2.
Sl1. K2tog. psso.
k2.yfwd. Rep from * to last st. K1.

My question is; Do I begin with one knit then bring my yarn forward to knit two more increasing to 5 stitches. Then decrease it by 2 stitches on the second line.(to cancel it out) and then add two more from the third line? -making it bigger?

or do I Increase by one on the first line and knit two? Does the yfwd go with the k1 or the K2?
Thanks!

Baby booties

I'm attempting to knit my first pair of baby booties, but I'm having trouble understanding the pattern.

I've got the toe cap, but I can't figure out how to transition into the sides. Here's where I'm at:

Toe Cap:
Cast on 9 sts.
Work 12 rows even in seed st pat.
Cut yarn.

Sides:
Cas on 16 sts.
With RS facing, pick up and knit 8 sts even spaced along right side of toe cap piece, work in seed st across 9 sts of toe top, pick up and knit 8 sts evenly spaced along left side of toe cap piece, cast on 16 sts.

cast on 5 stitches at the end of row

Help needed. I am reading the pattern for a purse and have never cast on at the end of rows. The pattern says after two rows of st st, continue in st st and cast on 5 stitches at the end of next 5 rows. Do I cast on just like the first row? How do I make it st st? Thanks for any direction?

Hello everyone:
HELP!!

I am knitting BERNAT SOFTEE BABY HOODED BABY JACKET. Most of the instructions I understand with the exception of this one phrase that is making me even crazier than I already am.

What is the meaning of: "moss st pat"?

I have searched the Q&A with no luck.

Please help a newbie.

Thank you

Amount of yarn used vs. recommended by pattern

Is it a common issue that patterns tell you to by alot more yarn than the project calls for due to dye lot issues, differences in knitting styles, et. al. or am I in a minority here. I just finished a sweater that called for 11 balls of yarn and I knit to gauge no problem, same needle size as called for, and ended up with four balls left over. It's not tragic, but it makes me second-guess myself when purchasing new yarn.
