I was watching "Knitting and Crochet Today" on a PBS cable station late at night and saw a method for casting on stitches with a crochet hook. I would love to know how to do this and was wondering if anyone could describe the method for me. Thanks!

Converting yarn weights

Knitting friends, I'm back after a rather lengthy absence, and have a question for you. I've found a pattern for a "kimono" sweater-jacket that I would like to make. However, I don't care for the colors available in the yarn called for (sport weight, doubled) and would like to know how to convert that to a single yarn... maybe a heavy-worsted, or ??? In the picture it didn't look bulky enough to be a bulky-weight yarn. Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

to Goose: posting in the archives - not a good idea

You're probably unaware that most of us will not look beyond the second or third page (some have said that they will not look in the archives at all when they see a "new post" that is not on the first page) to track down archival additions.

You did the right thing by posting your original query as a new topic.

If you want to tie into an old topic you can simply reference it in the "new topic" message. Give the subject and author and then it's easy to find.

What is the difference between a garter stitch and a stockinette stitch? I know they look different but how in the heck do you knit them? Also, I have a pattern that calls for "5 garter st ridges incl cast on row" and I don't have a clue what they mean! Can someone please help or would it be better to go to a knitting class? Thanks for any help!
