Black and White Knit Pullover

Knit Project It's a challenge, but this pullover is a knock out! Follow the charts to success to complete this black and white beauty.

Sizess:

  • Bust sizes: 32" 34"—36" 38"—40"
  • Finished sizes: 38" 42" 46"

Directions are given for bust size 32. Change for sizes 34-36 and 38-40 are in parentheses.

Materials:

4-ply worsted weight yarn

  • 13 (14, 15) ozs. of black
  • 10 (11, 12) ozs. of white

Needles sizes:

  • 8 (ribbing) and 10 (body) or size to obtain the correct gauge
  • 2 stitch holders
  • Yarn needle or large-eye tapestry needle

Gauge:

Stockinette stitch on #10 needles:

  • 4 stitches = 1"
  • 11 rows = 2"

Note:

When changing colors, pick up new color from under dropped color to prevent holes. Carry color not in use loosely across wrong side of work.

Back:

Starting at lower edge, with smaller needles and Black, cast on 67 (75. 83) stitches.

Ribbing-Row 1: (wrong side) Purl (p) 1 stitch, * knit (k) 1 stitch, p 1.* Repeat between ** across row.

chart aRow 2: K 1, * p 1, k 1*. Repeat between ** across row. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until 2" from beginning and increase 10 stitches evenly spaced across last row and end ready for a right side row. 77 (85, 93) stitches. Change to larger needles and Stockinette stitch (knit right side rows, purl wrong side rows).

Chart A: Begin Chart A on row 1 where indicated for size being made and work to top. End ready for right side row.

Chart B: Begin Chart B on row 1 where indicated for size being made and work to top. End ready for a right side row. Continue to work Chart A; then B until back measures 16" from lower edge or desired length to underarms, end ready for a right side row. Mark last row for underarms by weaving a thread of a contrast color through each side edge. Continue to work even until armholes measure 8-1/2 ( 9, 91/2)" above underarm marker, end ready for a right side row.

Shape Back Neck: Keeping to charted pattern, knit across first 23 (26, 30) stitches, slip remaining 54 (59, 63) stitches onto a stitch holder. Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge every row 4 times--19 (22, 26) stitches. Work even (if necessary) until armhole measures 9-1/2 (10, 10-1/2)" above armhole marker, end ready for a right side row.

Shape Shoulder: Bind off 19 (22) 26) stitches. With right side facing you, slip 23 (26, 30) stitch back to left-hand needle; leave 31 (33, 33) center stitches on stitch holder for back neck. Work to correspond to opposite side, reversing back neck shaping.

Front:

back front diagramsWork same as for back until armholes measure 6 (6-1/2, 7)" above underarm markers, end ready for a right side row.

Shape Front Neck: Keeping to charted pattern, knit across first 27 (30, 34) stitches, slip remaining 50 (55, 59) stitches onto a stitch holder.

Next Row: (wrong side) Keeping to charted pattern, purl across row. Decrease 1 stitch at neck edge on next row; then every right side row 7 times more--19 (22, 26) stitches. Work even until armhole measures same as for back, end ready for a right side row. Shape shoulder same as for back. With right side facing you, slip 27 (30, 34) stitches back to left-hand needle; leave 23 (25, 25) center stitches on stitch holder for front neck. Work to correspond to opposite side, reversing front neck shaping.

Sleeves:

sleeve diagramStarting at lower edge, with smaller needles and Black, cast on 33 (35, 37) stitches. Work in ribbing same as for back for 2", end ready for a right side row.

Next Row: Knit across, increasing 1 stitch in each stitch--66 (70, 74) stitches.

Following Row: Purl across, increasing 3 stitches evenly spaced--69 (73, 77) stitches. Change to larger needles and Stockinette stitch.

Chart A: Begin Chart A on row 9 where indicated for size being made and work to top. End ready for a right side row.

Chart B: Begin Chart B on row 1 where indicated for size being made and work to top. End ready for a right side row. Now continue to work Charts A and B (beginning each on row 1 and work to top), at the same time, shape sleeve. Working increases into charted patterns, increase 1 stitch each side on next row; then every 2" 3 times more. 77 (81, 85) stitches. Work even until sleeve measures 19 (20, 20)" from lower edge, or desired length to underarms, end ready for a right side row. Bind off 77 ( 81, 85) stitches.

Finishing:

Weave or sew left shoulder seam. Neckband: From right side with smaller needles and Black, pick up and knit 5 stitches evenly spaced along shaped back neck edge, knit 31 (33, 33) stitches from back neck holder, pick up and knit 6 stitches evenly spaced along shaped back neck edge, pick up and knit 16 stitches evenly spaced along left front neck edge, knit 23 (25, 25) stitches from front neck holder, pick up and knit 16 stitches evenly spaced along right front neck. 97 (101, 101) stitches. Beginning on row 1, work in
ribbing same as for back for 1-1/4". Bind off loosely in ribbing. Weave or sew right shoulder and neckband seam. Weave or sew on sleeves between underarm markers. Weave or sew side and sleeve seams.
