Window Dressing - Crocheted Tie Backs

tie-backs

Use basic crochet stitches to fashion this richly textured curtain tieback. Combine yarns with pearls or other embellishments.

Materials:

  • Fingering Weight Yarn
    6 oz. Baby Blue
    6 oz. Medium Blue

  • Pompadour Yarn (fingering-weight yarn with a rayon thread)
    6 ozs. White
    6 ozs. Blue Variegated
  • Crochet hook: Size E

With each color, make 2 twisted cords as follows. For each cord use 12 strands of yarn 9 yards long.

Twisted Cord:

Tie one end of the strands around center of a pencil or knitting needle; fasten other end to secure hook or post. Pull the strands taut and twist in one direction until the cord begins to kink. Fold in half, allowing the cord to twist on itself. Join one cord of each color and yarn (4 cords) and tie both ends securely with lengths of double strands of yarn. Twist again and make a new cord, allowing cord to twist on itself. Tie row ends securely. Clip uneven ends.

Cap each end as follows:

With Medium Blue and E hook, chain (ch) 2.
Round 1: Work 8 single crochet (sc) in 2nd ch from hook. Join with a slip stitch (sl st). Ch 1, DO NOT TURN.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc -- 16 sc. Continue in rounds on 16 sc, joining each round with a sl st and ch 1 for a total of 11 rounds. Fasten off. Make 2 for each cord. Cover each end of cord with a cap and sew securely in place.

Center Tassel:

Over center of cord place 100 -- 12 inch strands of White Pompadour. Form tassel by tying strands securely below twisted cord.

Leaves:

Make 8 leaves to cover top portion of each tassel. With E hook and Medium Blue, ch 17. Work through one loop only of each chain. Work as follows: 1 sl st in 2nd and 3rd ch from hook, 1 sc, 1 half double crochet (hdc), 2 double crochet (dc), 5 triple crochet (tr), 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc in each of last 3 chains. Continue to work on other side of starting chain, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 5 tr, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 2 sl st. Fasten off with a sl st on top of leaf. Sew leaves to top of tassel as shown, slightly overlapping one another.

Flower:

With Baby Blue, ch 2. Work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with a sl st. Ch 3, 2 dc in joining stitch, ch 2, sl st in same joining stitch, * (1 sc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sl st) in next sc; repeat from * around -- 8 petals. Fasten off. Make 6 flowers for each tassel and sew to the bottom of the leaves.

Curls:

With Variegated Blue, ch 51. Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across. Fasten off. Make 4 curls for each tassel. Draw a double strand of yarn through curl and fasten to tassel, evenly spaced between flowers.
