In the following instructions, the crocheted mesh screen is shown embellished with dimensional crocheted leaves and chains to create a tree effect. We have provided rough sketches on placement of these chains and leaves, however, this is the type of piece that allows each individual to express his or her design talents.
Approximately 17 1/2" x 68" inside the wood frame.
Size E and F OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GIVEN GAUGE.
15 stitches = 2" 5 rows = 2"
Make 3 for background mesh. To Begin: With F hook, chain 138.
Row 1: DC in 6th ch from hook, * ch 2, sk 2 chs, 1 dc in next ch; repeat from * across—45 mesh. Ch 5, turn.
Row 2: DC in first dc, *ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next dc; repeat from * across. Ch 5. Turn. Repeat Row 2 for pattern until 175 rows are completed, or size necessary to fit the panel.
Each leaf to measure approximately 2-2 1/4".
Leave an 8" length at beginning of chain and fastening off point. With E hook, ch 13. Working through 1 loop only along chain, 1 sl st in 2nd and 3rd chs, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr in each of next 4 chs, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 scs in last loop. Continue on other side of chain, working in 1 loop; 1 sc in same chain (opposite side), 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 tr in each of next 4 loops, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sl st in each of next 2 loops, 1 sl st at tip (joining to first sl st of beginning). Fasten off.
Make approximately 165 leaves, or as many as necessary to carry out your design.
With E hook make 30 yards of chain, or as much as necessary to create trunk of tree (double strand) and branches (single strand).

Sand and paint wood strips before assembling. Make wood frame as shown in diagram. Staple each crochet mesh panel to inside of one frame. Weave lengths of chain, double strands to form tree trunk, single strands for branches, through mesh. Leave ends in back to fasten. Pin approximately 55 leaves to each panel or as many as desired to form design. Sew center of leaves to mesh from the back. Cut buckram to fit screen frame and lay over back of crochet work. Secure 2nd frame to first with wood screws. For center support of each screen section, cut 2 wood strips approximately 17 1/2", or size necessary and space evenly in back of each panel.
Plan hinge placement for desired look. Curved: Place hinges in one direction. Angled: Place hinges in opposite directions.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of these instructions. We cannot be responsible, however, for variances in individual techniques, human errors or typographical mistakes.
