Adding on stitches

I have an afghan pattern that is worked diagonally. You knit 12 sts for 24 rows. Then you cast on 12 sts, k to end. Next row: Cast on 12 sts, k12,p12. k12. It's worked in blocks of 12 stitches. I need help casting on the stitches on work that's already been started without getting extra yarn where the two meet.

Garter stitch knitted in the round

I have knitted sleeves on a baby sweater on 4 dp needles - top-down. I need 6 rows of garter st at the wrist end of the sleeve...is it possible to do garter st in the round? The sleeves were done top-down in stockinette st so I purled around the 6 rows thinking that would make garter st but it is just purl with the stockinette on the reverse side so, of course, it rolls to the inside. Can garter st be done in the round?

showl - ssk abbreviations

Hi..
I'm knitting a showl and the instructions call for ssk for the corner decrease...However, the abbreviation chart says to slip, slip as to purl...then you knit the two ....I thought it was slip, slip as to knit and then knit the two together...Can't find anything where ssk is mentioned with both as to purl ...All rows are knitted for the showl....Any suggestions? Big thanks ahead...Chali

Socks

Does anyone know of any books or websites that are good for beginning sock knitting? I only know how to knit scarves right now and signed up for a sock knitting class and found it to be too advanced for my level. I had no clue how to work the dpn's (which needle to start knitting with (and off of what needle) once the stiches have been distributed onto the different needles) .......I guess the teacher assumed that everyone would already know how to do this. Needless to say I was quite frustrated but I would like to try to learn on my own, if possible. Thanks so much.
